For some time now we have all heard of or tried different diets to handle our body’s needs. Usually when someone says diet we usually think of a program to lose weight or to handle some health problem we are having. We hear about different types of diets - the South Beach diet, the Atkins diet, etc. Each has a remedy for something we are trying handle with our bodies.

Let’s take a look at the definition of diet. In the dictionary it’s defined as "The usual food and drink of a person or animal." The origin of the word comes from Latin meaning, "way of living" and from Greek "to live one's life". Different cultures in the world have different diets to handle their bodies and that works for them. We have adopted some of these "diets" as our own.
 
To be in control of our bodies, it should be determined, what is the "usual" food that should be consumed so we can have the proper "way of living" to achieve optimum health. There are supplements on the market to correct and enhance our diet so that we have what we need. Many of us know that the foods we eat are lacking in certain nutrients and this makes us reach for supplements. There are also environmental factors that affect us such as pollution, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, etc. These create toxicity in the body that actually prevent food and other nutrients from giving us the benefits we seek.
 
A health professional seeking to help you with your body’s needs must know what you are eating to determine what in your diet is improper and to help put you in control of your own body. If you are not in control of your body it will get sick. It’s not smart to wait for things to happen before you put attention on it. You need to know what shape your body is in to prevent major problems from occurring. Otherwise it’s like waiting for your engine to blow up before you find out from the mechanic that you forgot to put oil in your car. The more education you have will help you be more accurate and responsible with your body handlings.

Diets that are designed to help you lose weight are only effective when they help you understand why you’re overweight and can help you maintain a better way of life. All too often, once a person has gotten the results they expected from a diet they go back to the way they were eating before and there isn’t a follow up program to help them maintain that quality of nutrition. When we know what a diet is, we are more inclined to monitor what we should be eating.
 
 So, "what is a diet anyway?" It’s a way of living that allows us to have a quality of life we expect so we can achieve our goals in life. If we neglect our bodies, we sometimes have health problems that are difficult to reverse. That’s a drag! A body is a machine and it is there to serve us throughout our entire life.
