Lean Muscle Mass - What Is It and Why Should I Care? PDF Print E-mail

Even though a lot of our attention is on being fit and losing weight, more Americans are fatter than ever. We have more diets, more exercise, more health advice than our forefathers ever had, yet the problem is getting worse, not better.  Also, did you know there is such a thing as a “fat, skinny person”?

We struggle, sacrifice, and starve ourselves to lose a few pounds or a lot, and then...we gain the same weight back again and then some!  We are eating the same amount as we always have or less, yet we gain weight.  We eat what we are told is healthy, and still the pounds will not budge.  It’s just not fair!

Actually, our attention should be on our “lean muscle mass” and not “pounds” of weight.  You may have noticed at some time when you exercised regularly that your clothes were looser, but per the scale you had not lost weight.  That’s because you were building muscle.  I bet you felt better, happier, and more comfortable with your body at that time.

The reason for this is that lean muscle mass is much more metabolically active than other forms of body mass- i.e., fat, tendons, ligaments, etc.  The more metabolically active our cells are the more alive we are.  I am sorry to have to tell you this, but many diets today actually cause and/or contribute to muscle wasting and muscle loss!

A “fat, skinny person” is someone who looks normal or thin but has a too high fat to lean muscle mass ratio. But it’s not just exercise that increases muscle mass.

Interesting in looking younger than you really are?  Again, the answer is lean muscle mass. Your number one tool against aging is lean muscle mass!  Also, don’t fool yourself!  That fat is not just sitting there! It is emitting harmful substances.  One of the more interesting discoveries of the past decade has been the recognition that the adipocyte (fat cell) causes the release of inflammatory substances.  This contributes to arthritis, aches, pains and cardiovascular disease.
